Nutrition and beauty

Your body regularly replaces its cells, and new cells are created out of the nutrition you put in your body. You can therefore see how important it is to get the right nutrients. There are some key areas to watch out for which are discussed below as well as the right nutrients to help with each of these key areas –
Collagen
For good skin, there are some fundamental basics which need to be considered. Collagen in the structure of the skin provides stretch, elasticity and tight skin. As we age, we lose collagen which leads to lose, saggy and wrinkling skin (something none of us really want)! Collagen is not found in many food sources, so taking it in supplemental form may be beneficial. There are a few different types of collagen, with marine collagen being the most preferred form for beauty.
Vitamin C is also needed for the production of collagen, and a vitamin C deficiency causes fragile and weak skin. Vitamin C therapy can reduce the appearance of wrinkles by promoting collagen formation. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5579659/ Vitamin C requirement in is much higher in individuals who smoke, and hence the premature wrinkling seen in smokers.
Collagen is an essential component of small blood vessels called capillaries which carry nutrition to the skin cells and takes away skin cell waste products. Collagen provides the flexibility of capillaries and allows the blood to properly oxygenate the skin. Capillaries can become less flexible when collagen production falls, leading to poor circulation which may result in a dull appearance of the skin.
Protection from free radical damage
The skin cell membrane is made with fats. These fats are susceptible to free radical damage caused by the environment, including too much sun exposure, poor diet and pollution. Vitamin E combats free radical damage in the body and the skin and is the main free radical neutraliser in human blood. When the body does not have enough vitamin E to neutralise free radicals, damage may slow down the production of collagen and contribute towards wrinkling. Some research suggests that vitamin E may reduce UV damage to the skin.
Vitamin C is another nutrient that is used to protect the skin cells from free radical damage and is needed for normal skin repair.
Another major protector of free radical damage is Grape seed extract. Grape seed extract contains oligomeric proanthocyanidins, known as OPC for short. OPC is a potent protector from free radical damage and when taken as a supplement has multiple benefits to the skin.
Moisturisation
Maintaining hydration of the skin is essential for a reduction of appearance in wrinkles and for a smooth appearance. Staying adequately hydrated with water is essential so remember to sip on water throughout the day. This is often easier to do in the Summer but remember that it is just as important in the Winter. There is a molecule in the skin called hyaluronic acid. This is a moisture carrying molecule and promotes good skin hydration, a plump appearance, and a decrease in visible wrinkles. Because of these benefits, you will often see Hyaluronic Acid in good quality beauty supplements. Vitamin E is also needed for the moisturisation of the skin and is found abundantly in the skin cell membranes.
Balanced hormones
Balanced hormones are essential for healthy skin. Normal oestrogen levels are needed to encourage the production of collagen. After the menopause, oestrogen declines, and woman see an increase in wrinkling of the skin.
Normal levels of testosterone (not too high) are needed for clear skin. Testosterone causes the oil made by the skin to become thick, causing clogged pores and pimples / acne. High testosterone is a major cause of acne. Zinc is an essential mineral for the normal balance of hormones, and therefore for clear skin. Zinc is often prescribed for hormonal acne. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3366450/
Normal turnover of skin cells
Skin cells are constantly being shed off and replaced by new cells. This can sound awful but is actually a normal process and occurs faster in the skin than many other areas in the body. Each time a skin cell is cloned from another skin cell, it requires zinc for effective DNA replication. In the absence of zinc, skin cell DNA replication is impaired which leads to poor skin health and integrity. Skin cells without zinc are more prone to damage from the sun and environmental factors.
Nails are also made from the same cells as skin, only they are squashed and hardened. A lack of zinc in the nails can contribute towards weak, bendy, and easily breakable nails, as well as white spots and blemishes.
